Hello friends! Excited to be chatting about the pros and cons of Nuuly today. I recently became a member (thanks to my friend Talia who influenced me!) and have received quite a few questions about what I think. In case you aren’t already familiar, Nuuly is a women’s monthly clothing rental subscription service. FYI – this isn’t sponsored in any way (although I’d love to work with them!). I pay full price for my membership. 🙂
How it Works
Each month you get to pick 6 items from Nuuly’s website for $88 (+ tax). It feels just like online shopping! They ship the items to you, you wear and enjoy them for a month, then send them back by your next billing date a month later. If you fall in love with something, you can buy it and send back the rest.
The Pros
- The process is super easy. Their website is very intuitive and straightforward. Once you choose your items, they offer fast, free shipping! The order is delivered to your door in a reusable container or box, so that you can use the same one when you ship it all back. AND they include a pre-paid printed shipping label for you, so it’s super convenient to return everything when the month is up.
- You can pause or cancel anytime. Game-changer!! You aren’t stuck with a long-term commitment if you realize it’s not for you.
- It’s like a wardrobe refresh once a month, and for a great price. This is probably why I love it most! As silly as it is, it can be easy to get sick of wearing your same clothes all the time. Adding/swapping 6 new pieces a month is just really fun! The cardigan, coat, and jeans I’m wearing in the outfit above are all from my Nuuly this month. Together they would retail for $521 total (before tax), but I got them all (+ three more items) for $88. I know it’s not quite comparable because I’m not going to own/have them forever, but still!!!
- You get the chance to wear what you might not be able to otherwise. For example: I don’t always want to buy something like a bright $300 statement dress that I won’t be able to wear often, but thanks to Nuuly I can own it for a month!
- They allow for bonus items! If you are eyeing more than 6 items, you can pay a bit extra for ‘bonus items’. They’re $18 each and you can add up to two, any month or every month.
- No worrying about laundry/dry cleaning or repairs. They take care of this stuff, which is amazing and makes the whole thing even more hassle-free.
- Works perfectly for special occasions! Not that we have had a ton to attend lately due to COVID, but this is something to keep in mind. I don’t know about you but I love getting something new to wear to events like weddings. Nuuly makes this very attainable/reasonable!
- Sustainability! Renting / sharing clothes is much more sustainable than buying cheap clothes from fast fashion websites that will only last one season.
The Cons
- Parting with items you love can be hard. However, you do have the option to buy them outright and not send them back! Personally I haven’t done this yet.
- As with any online shopping experience, you can’t be confident that the clothes will fit right. That said, you could always order multiple sizes if you really want to make sure it will work.
- The clothes aren’t necessarily brand new so they might show some wear. I have only noticed this with one or two pieces I rented, and they were minor issues like some pilling on a coat. (They wouldn’t send you a piece that was in bad condition). I don’t think it’s a big deal… I love thrift/vintage shopping and honestly this isn’t much different!
- Some might say that it would be smarter to save that $88/month, and put it towards buying an item you really love. I think it just depends on the individual and their priorities! You have to decide for yourself what’s worth it.
